A good example of this is in Chapter 3 (pg. 7), stating Mr.Pontellier returned to his wife the information that Raoul had a high fever and needed looking after Mrs.Pontellier was quite sure Raoul had no fever Even though Edna was sure that her son did not have a fever because he held no symptoms and did not complain of anything before he went off to bed, she still went to check on Raoul simply because her husband had told her to. But as the story pr ogresses, the once obedient Edna grows to defy the commands of her husband. In Chapter 11 (pg. 42), Edna refuses to return inside when her husband calls for her. She does not just say no either; she boldly turns him down, stating, Leonce, go to bed I mean to stay out here. I dont wish to go in, and I dont intend to. Dont speak to me like that again; I shall not answer you. This is a drastic change in personality in comparison to how she was just a few chapters early in the story. She is more independent and outspoken than she had ever been. Along with not submitting to her husbands commands, Edna has also gone from being a half decent mother completely isolating herself from her family. She went from doing the tasks that most mothers of that time were accustomed to doing to living away from home and cheating on her husband. CHAPTER QUOTATION EXPLAINED à à à Throughout The Awakening by Kate Chopin, Edna Pontellier gradually isolates herself both mentally and physically from her family, especially her husband. Although Edna seems to be quick to push Robert away at the beginning of the story, she begins to grow closer to him during her awakening. At the beginning of the novella, Mrs.Pontellier was loyal to her husband, regardless of what he demanded if her. She followed whatever he told her to do, even if she knew that nothing would come from his requests. An example of this (as previously stated) is in Chapter 3 when Mr.Pontellier asks Edna to go and check on their son, Raoul, because he believes that he has a fever. Edna does so even though she knows for sure that Raoul could not possible have a fever. As the novella progresses, she starts to recognize her true feelings for Robert and easily strays away from Mr.Pontellier and their marriage. In Chapter 13 (pg. 50-51), Edna speaks of how she has fallen asleep for a long time and has awoken to a world where it is just her and Robert, stating, How many years have I slept?à The whole island seems changed Although nothing has physically changed, Ednas state of mind has. This quote allows the reader to clearly see that Edna has changed mentally, for better or for worse. She has changed from an obedient, robot-minded wife to a self-discovery obsessed woman who is completely hooked on another man that she is willing to forget the world for him. SHORT SCENE ANALYSIS à à à In The Awakening by Kate Chopin, Chapter 17 proves itself to be important as it shows further character development of both Mrs. and Mr. Pontellier. The chapter begins with Mr.Pontellier returning home for dinner. He expects for his wife to tell him of her reception day only to find that she had spent the day out instead of abiding by her normal duties. Again, this scene shows Ednas progressive and more blatant defiance of her husbands wishes. The interaction between the two is quite reminiscent of how a rebellious teen might interact with their parents. Mr.Pontellier seems more confused than upset at Edna. Mrs.Pontellier does not give him a reason to why she left. She simply states that she just wanted to go out: like a defiant child rebelling just to rebel. One of the more important parts of this chapter though, following the interaction scene between Edna and Mr.Pontellier, is Ednas tantrum. After Mr.Pontellier heads off to the club, Edna returns to her room. It state s, Once she stopped, and taking off her wedding ring, flung it upon the carpet. When she saw it lying there, she stamped her heel upon it, striving to crush it. But her small boot heel did not make an indenture, not a mark upon the little glittering circlet (pg. 71). This scene is very important in the discovery of Ednas character specifically. It makes it clear to the reader that Edna will not be able to leave her marriage to be with Robert so easily. This is shown through Ednas inability to destroy her wedding ring as easily as she did her handkerchief and a glass vase. This upper class group of people were descendants of wealthy French settlers. They were thought of highly even though when, looking back at them now, many can recognize that how they treated women was unacceptable. They held what was considered to be perfect families at the time: a stay at home wife, disciplined children, and of course, a husband who left his wife to do most everything. Once married, they were left to complete a multitude of daily tasks in their new homes such as devote their lives to their husbands and children, obey every and all commands given by their husbands, take up appealing hobbies and much more. Women were encouraged to keep their feelings, specifically negative and thought-provoking ones, buried deep down within them for the better of their families. So, in my opinion, I agree with Edna wanting to isolate and distance herself from her Creole lifestyle. Although she tends to be a bit brash when it comes to how she rebels against the Creole way of life, it is understandable to why she reacted in such a way. No one deserves to be repressed in such a manner. Women deserve just as much respect as men, especially in context to the Creoles. In their society, women do so much but get so little in return.

Dropping Out Of High School Dropouts Essay - 987 Words
Iââ¬â¢ve heard a lot about high school dropouts. through my years in highschool this topic had always popped up. I wonder is dropping out of high school bad as some make it seem? My opinion is that dropping out high school isnââ¬â¢t as bad as some people make it seem. A lot of smart people drop out of high school, people like Einstein dropped out at age 16 and still accomplished many things in life. I discovered a lot about high school dropouts and the many reasons on why students make this decision. Matthew Lynch, Ed.D. the author of ââ¬Å"The Call to Teachâ⬠wrote a well informed article ââ¬Å"Cause and Effect: The High Cost of High School Dropouts.â⬠I decided to use this for facts of high school dropouts. Another article I found interesting was from Dorothy Stoneman founder and CEO of YouthBuild USA, inc. The sample are taken in Area 34 in which the following stores are include, Deptford, Greenwich, Peckham, Lewisham, Eltham, Catford and Woolwich. These sales assistance jobs are to provide customer service, shop floor filling and maintain the sales. They work in warehouse and shop floor equally. The questioner was constructed using 18 values; the questioner table was based on the value table constructed by . The questioner was classified into three major values such as organizational values, personal values and professional values. In organizational values the questioners contain six values which they follow in the organization during their work. In Personal values the questioner was design to touch the value that impact on their day to day life. In Professional values key elemental values were listed in the table, this is done to prove the impact of the organizational value on the professional life. The collected data were then processed by the team supervisors in order to check the data from the organizational values. Then the corrected data were taken to the store manager to get the approval that the processed data were correct. In the whole process the individual identification was not revealed. The data related to the individual were collect except the personal information such as name was excluded. The feedback was asked to rated in rank the importance of each value on a 7- point Likert scale (1 = the least importance; 7 = the most importance). A week time was given to the colleague to complete the questioner and return back to the supervisor. The colleague was very cooperative and the questioner was returned successfully. The contribution from female part was high as they occupy 90 percentage of the work force. Almost 40 were female and about 80 percentage they were aged between 25 and 35. The table display the mean value of all three values and their percentage. If we notice we have discussed in literature review, there is a close weight age between the professional values and the organizational value. While the individual is following the organizational value in the organization, it indirectly enhances the professional values also. And the individual personal values are also impacted by the organizational value and make him more disciplined. The questioner is included in appendix 1 for reference. Majority of the individual in the organization feel that organizational value impact there professional and personal life. The majority of people feel that strongly agree to all organisation value. They feel these values create a strong bond among the individual in the organisation. This may lead the individual to create a healthy work environment. These also influence the individual to not leave the organization and creating a bond between the organization and the individual. The questioner was useful in concluding the impact of organizational value on an individual and these values are important any organisation. The questioner was framed from the research work already done on organisational values and their research work helped to justify the importance of organisational value in this research project. Discussion: This part of the report is used to compile the literature review with the methodology to prove the importance of organisational value in an organisation. The core values are communicated well inside the organisation. Every individual in the organisation must abide with these values and contribute to the organisational growth. These values will enable in accomplishing the organisational mission and achieve the goal set before them. Values exist in every organisation. Theory proves that there is a need for organisational values in any organisation. These values create a desire work environment in an organisation, so the individual feel more comfortable to work. If the effort is poor in discussing the organisational values to the individual, this may result in the bad performance of the individual in the organisation. So these values must be communicated properly with high priority to entire individual in the organisation. This will lead the employee to maintain the organised work environment and the performance of the individual will not be affected. The researcher have highlighted that these values will face failure, if there is poor cooperation from the management and lack of transparency. If the organisational value must be implemented fully, it must be transparent and very action must be recorded. The literature review helped to demonstrate that organisational value is most needed element in an organisation. The researched who have been listed in this report have demonstrated that the organisational value is an important factor in an organisation. They have stated that these value will and have always been a part of an organisation. Itââ¬â¢s not possible for any organisation to function without any values. These values are stated as the action in and around the organisation, so it must be properly defined. Every individual in the organisation must abide to follow the set of procedure to maintain the vision of organization and carry forward its mission in effective way. These values have influenced the other values from the result which is highlighted in this report. These organisational values have dominated other values, since these value have proven from review that they play a construct role in an individual life. They can influence majority and can result in a positive mode. The performance of the individual can be improved by the influence of these organisational values. The researchers have stated the coherence on these values by illustrating that these values have conceptual values internally. Appropriate examples from the researcher have stated that these values cannot be eliminated from the organisation. The researchers have stated about the work environment, job satisfaction, and employee contribution to the organisation by implementing the organisational value in an organisation. These theories have stated that individual in the organisation have been an object in implementing these values into action. While defining the organisation in the literature review, itââ¬â¢s clear that these values exist from the beginning to the end in every function of an individual in an organisation. The chart in figure 1 shows the importance of organisational values from the rest of the values in an individual life. Discussing in relation with the survey result, the importance of organisational value will be clearly highlighted. These set of question had in fact helped the research to find the amount of impact these organisational values have done on an individual. The values were marked against a scale ranging between, 1 to 7. Then these marked values were converted into percentage for the research readers understanding. The first question was to find whether the organisational value have influence the individual in the organisation. The data which shows that 66 % of individual have strongly agree that organisational value have influenced them. They can be directly or indirectly be influenced by organisational value in an organisation. There were a low response for disagree with influence by organisational value. The disagreed individuals feel they were not driven by these organisational values. The next question from the questioner was addressing about the work environment. The question was asking individual whether these values were able to create healthy environment. The response about 52 percentage for strongly agree that these values create a healthy work environment. As discussed in the literature review, these organisational values create a healthy work environment for the individual to work in the organisation. There was a positive response for this question, this lead the individual to be retained in the same organisation over the years. This trend will give the individual to have the freedom to express and enjoy the work they do in the organisation. These values enable the individual to have job satisfaction, since they have an organised environment to work. These value emerges the bond between the employee, allowing the individual to have an internally bond with organisation. The response from the result shows that 64 percentage of individual who took part in the survey feel they create a bond within the individual in the organisation. This is a positive response for the management team; because when the individual feel they have the bond with the organization then itââ¬â¢s easy to manage these individual in the organisation. The contribution from each individual will be high and the performance of the individual will be better. So the organisational values have a major role to play in an organisation. These organisational values also motivate individual in an organisation. The individual in the organisation will experience the pulling factor, driving them towards the organisation. When this question was put forward to the individual in Poundland, 58 percentage of individual feel they are been motivated by these values. This factor have improved the individual performance while working toward the organisation mission and accomplishing the goal. Thus this survey response helps this research to state that organisational values have a major role to play in an organisation. These values contribute directly and indirectly to the organisations growth. These values influence an individual in an organisation and the individual performance will be change based on these values. These values set a tone of working environment, enabling the individual to enjoy the time they spend in the organisation. The individual have less tendency to leave the organisation and giving the organisation support and working together to achieve the common organisational goal. Conclusions and Recommendations: This report has covered the research aim and objective. This report has highlighted the importance of organisational value in any organisation. The need for organisational value is critically analysed in this report. Literature review has help to highlight some valuable research work on organizational value and stress on their importance. The research works have proven the need for organisational value in an organisation. These values have enabled the work environment to move forward on a positive note and bind the individual with the organisation. The report also critically analysed the six values of Poundland, highlight why the six values might impact the organisation. Survey was helpful in this report to prove the need for organisational value in an organisation. The percentage was calculated to figure out the clear picture, the need for these values. Thus organisational value helps to set the tone of environment and bond people together in an organisation. These values make a bond between the organisation and the individual and resulting in individual better performance. Thus these values are always needed for any organisation to accomplish their goal and move in the path of success. Recommendation is done using the gather information which has been published in the earlier part of the report. The organisational value must be designed as simple, so every individual in the organisation can afford to implement in their work. The values must be designed such a manner that it influence the individual to productive and process good habit in life. Since the individual contribute to the organisation and the community around him or her, these values must be having strong impact. This report will conclude with proven information that, organisational value has a major role to play in an organisation and itââ¬â¢s very essential to have a quality values in every organisation. HOW TO ENHANCE YOUR WEBSITES CREDIBILITY In my last blog, I talked about taking the fluff out of your companyââ¬â¢s website ââ¬â getting rid of phrases like ââ¬Å"weââ¬â¢re dedicated toâ⬠and ââ¬Å"our mission isâ⬠and actually saying something about your services. Iââ¬â¢m following that up with more ways that you can build credibility on the web and turn casual visitors into paying customers. Here are a few pretty easy things you can do to make your website work harder for you: 1. Add a ââ¬Å"Testimonialsâ⬠Page. Sure, youââ¬â¢re going to say that youââ¬â¢re the best in the business. But that message is WAY more effective when it comes from your actual satisfied clients. If youââ¬â¢ve got raving fans, show it. Ask your past and current customers to give you some feedback and post it on your site ââ¬â positive, honest customer testimonials go a long way when it comes to building credibility with prospective clients. 2. Add a ââ¬Å"Case Studiesâ⬠Page. Show off your problem-solving skills with some real-life examples. You can talk all day about how your company goes the extra mile, but itââ¬â¢s much more interesting ââ¬â and credible ââ¬â to post a few case studies. Did your company recently come up with an innovative solution that saved a client thousands? Or have you recently helped a customer solve a major productivity problem? Show what you can do to keep your customers up and running. 3. Add a Client List. Anyone can say that they have hundreds of satisfied clients ââ¬â but that doesnââ¬â¢t mean itââ¬â¢s true. Instead of simply telling people you have clients, give a few examples. Of course, itââ¬â¢s even better if youââ¬â¢ve got a few big-name, Fortune 500 companies. But even small, local clients are credibility-builders. 4. Add Real Pictures. Nowââ¬â¢s not the time to be camera shy. Instead of stock photos, use real pictures of your facilities ââ¬â and your people. This is especially important if your business is mostly web-based ââ¬â clients feel like they can put an actual face with a name. 5. Add a Physical Address. Again, this is a big one if you do most of your business online. Most customers feel a lot better knowing that your company actually has an address. A real street address ââ¬â rather than simply a P.O. box ââ¬â sends a message that your company is stable. And legitimate. Your street address ââ¬â and the rest of your contact information ââ¬â should be at the bottom of every page of your website. Combine these credibility-building ideas with killer copy and a good, easy-to-scan layout, and youââ¬â¢ve got a site that helps drive sales and build up your customer base. Not everything has to drain your bank account, there are endless legions of things you could do with your time that will enrich you and this world and wonââ¬â¢t cost much if anything. For exampleâ⬠¦ 1 Body Sculpting If youââ¬â¢re a college student, a part of your tuition pays for a nice well-equipped (hopefully) gym somewhere, usually near the stadiums and locker rooms. Now, once youââ¬â¢ve found it you should know that Body Sculpting isnââ¬â¢t just ââ¬Å"working outâ⬠like everybody thinks. It takes time, effort, discipline and hard work to REALLY sculpt your body into something brag-worthy. But what a way to spend time! And hey, even if you arenââ¬â¢t into the gym scene, you can sculpt through pure body weight training and nutrition. However, it should be noted that if you opt to put on tons of extra muscle (vs. just sculpting what you were born with) this is going to cost a fair amount of money! 2 Outdoor Fitness Sure, thereââ¬â¢s probably hiking and jogging and walking and so forth but what if you got into something a bit cooler? Like, thereââ¬â¢s suspension rope training where you walk tight ropes low to the ground, say, between two trees. Or, how about outdoor obstacle courses or serious mountain biking (the kind that involves scary trails and requires you to wear protective gear)? Thereââ¬â¢s no end to the things you can do for free outside your dorm room. Tons of people like you have already created fun little outdoorsy groups and theyââ¬â¢re yearning for more members! 3 Podcasting Why not create a Podcast? You can do that for free. All you gotta do is talk and minimize the amount of ââ¬Å"dead airâ⬠on the channel and youââ¬â¢ve got the basic down. Who cares if anyoneââ¬â¢s listening, because if you podcast regularly and consistently you WILL build some kind of audience (which you can then monetize for free as well) over time. If you want to be super-cool, have the topic revolve around your major, or your career goals. For example, focus on the industry youââ¬â¢re aiming at. But technically, you can podcast about ANYTHING. 4 Twitch If youââ¬â¢re going to game, why not set up a stream and do it with people around the world? You can set up your own stream channel, start broadcasting your gaming and even interact with viewers. Did you know that tons of gamers now make their living through streaming on Twitch? Not a bad way to make your gaming hobby a bit more productive. Like podcasting, just remember it will take time to build a viewing audience. 5 Volunteer! If you already volunteer, thank you! If not, and itââ¬â¢s something you avoid because of whatever preconceived notions you harbor, try it out! What youââ¬â¢ll find is that volunteering is a proverbial good-karma-factory. And, it typically leads to new exciting opportunities as well, especially once you put your heart into it. Itââ¬â¢s not always the ââ¬Å"bleeding heartâ⬠stuff either. You could mentor someone, or teach people a skill you possess. You could even create your own way to give back to the community and make your environment a better place without spending a dime. 7 Politics Hereââ¬â¢s a thoughtâ⬠¦get involved in local and state politics! And this goes for all college kids across the world: youââ¬â¢re sorely needed! The world needs more people to care about what politicians are doing and where the money and resources are going. Join a current events or politics-based discussion group and start from there. Plus, this type of stuff always looks good on a resume. 8 Certifications Hop online and take a gander at all the little certifications you can get for free. Some are funny, but some are actually quite interesting and handy. Just donââ¬â¢t go ââ¬Å"cert-crazyâ⬠and start collecting certifications like stampsâ⬠¦it starts to look weird after about four or five. Then of course thereââ¬â¢s all the ultra-cheap certifications that you can get for probably around $20-$40 and the same thing goes ââ¬â donââ¬â¢t jump completely overboard. Stick with certifications that you can see yourself actually putting to good use. 9 OpenSource Ed If certifications arenââ¬â¢t up your alley and you would like something a bit more challenging, then head into the online OpenSource Education revolution and pick something spectacular! Think of itâ⬠¦imagine any subject, discipline or methodologyâ⬠¦and youââ¬â¢re likely to find an OpenSource class, course, ebook, training manual, or something on it. Welcome to the 21st century! So, now you know about some pretty cool options to put your time to use and keep yourself productive rather than lounging around wasting it. The emission of various gases from million of vehicles in roads has contributed to major global problem. Personal cars have emerged as the most notorious ones for this problem especially when they are moving at slow speeds or idling in traffic jams. This is the time when this man made gadgets produces the maximum emissions to the atmosphere with every body around that traffic absorbing the poison. Gasoline and diesel fuels combustion produces a mixture of hydrocarbons mainly carbon atoms, hydrogen as well as oxygen. The hydrocarbons are emitted as fragments of molecules of fuels which are burned partially. They do reactions with nitrogen oxides and in sunlightââ¬â¢s presence to create ground level ozone which becomes a main part of smog. This Ozone is harmful to human health as well as being toxic and sometimes causes cancer. Nitrogen Oxides (NOX) is produced in conditions of high pressure and temperature in the engine. Carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless and poisonous gas is emitted from car engines after incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon-based fuels. It comprises of one atom of carbon and one oxygen atom interlinked together. This implies that Bio-diesel when used either completely or partially with diesel fuel in deferent vehicle engines brings about some economical, environmental as well as social merits. Literature Review There is much concern all over the globe to reduce the emission of green house gases by 10% in the near future. Much emphasis has been on emissions of these gases from transportation fuels. In 2005, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) New Delhi came up with a passenger car engine that operated on bio-diesel fuel. This was developed from modifications of the traditional Indica diesel engine that was made some few years ago. The engine used 10 per cent of bio-diesel fuel mixed with diesel to operate the engine. This development, however experiences some significant challenges in that it would take a lot of duration for any manufacture to come up with fully developed bio-diesel engine cars. In March 2009, United Environment and Energy LLC chemists came up with fixed-bed reactor design that was considered energy-efficient and high through in put continuous flow. It was perceived as cost-effective for production of algae oil bio-diesel. This was termed as the first economical approach in production of bio-diesel from algae oil. Although, the design has been able to reduce cost by 40% it did not reduce the emission of green house gases to an effective percentage. Tsinghua University researchers in China in May 2009 tried to use sugarcane juice as a good feedstock indented for production of bio-diesel if utilized to give support to alga Chlorella protothecoides through the process of heterotrophic fermentation. This produced oil content of about 53. 0% by weight of dry cell. In May 2009, Iowa State University Researchers presented a proposal on dissolution of waste polystyrene (PS) in bio-diesel. This aimed at making the bio-diesel for consumption in motor vehicles more so in diesel engines as an approach to recover energy from the waste plastic. The researchers pointed out that the use of polystyrene-bio-diesel blends would lead to increase in engine power thus reduced emissions of green house gases. This still intents increase polystyrene concentrations with 5% as per the study. To help reduce the emissions of green house gases, Tom Harkin and some US senators, in June 2009 proposed to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to halt inclusion of in direct land use change effects as contributor to life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions in rule making indented for carrying out updated Renewable Fuels Standard that demands all bio-fuels to meet some defined life-cycle green house gas emission reduction targets prior to qualification. This research intents to come up with a more convenient approach of reducing the gases emitted from motor car diesel engines by obtaining the most optimum ratio of mixing bio-diesel, waste oil and diesel in car engine at the optimum engine speed. Research Methodology The research is conducted by experimenting the amount of green gases released from a diesel engine when diesel, bio-diesel, and waste oil are used at different to obtain different engine torques while the engine is increases from initial speed of 1500 rpm to 3200 rpm. The three fuels are used either purely or mixed with each other at different ratios while the rack is either maintained at 50% or at 100%. The amount of gases emitted for each condition is recorded in a table. The calves for the different gases emitted obtained at different speeds and racks are then plotted in several graphs. This is used to obtain the best fuel mixture and optimum speed and rack which release the least amount of gases to the atmosphere.

Popper and Kuhn: Two Views of Science In this essay I attempt to answer the following two questions: What is Karl Popperââ¬â¢s view of science? Do I feel that Thomas Kuhn makes important points against it? The two articles that I make reference to are "Science: Conjectures and Refutations" by Karl Popper and "Logic of Discovery or Psychology of Research?" by Thomas Kuhn. In the article, "Science: Conjectures and Refutations", Karl Popper attempts to describe the criteria that a theory must meet for it to be considered scientific. He calls this puzzle the problem of demarcation. Popper summarizes his arguments by saying, "the criterion of the scientific status of a theory is its falsifiability, or refutability, or testability." Kuhn says that he and Popper often agree as to what constitutes science and non-science. He claims that he differs with Popper in the methods that he uses to arrive at his conclusions. Kuhn says that if a line of demarcation is to be sought between science and non-science, we shouldnââ¬â¢t look for a "sharp or decisive" one, because science is not objective, as Popper would have us believe, but subjective. Popper claims that the common answer to the problem of delineating between science and pseudo-science is that science uses an empirical method, deriving from observations and experiments. This explanation does not satisfy Popper. He has a gut feeling that areas of study like astrology are not science, and he attempts to come up with a theory to prove it. One of the problems I have with Popper is that instead of looking at a concrete problem and trying to come up with an explanation, Popper first made up his mind that astrology is not science, and then set out to prove it. By Popperââ¬â¢s own admissions, confirming evidence is everywhere, but means little. This could be applied all of Popperââ¬â¢s examples. Popper is "dissatisfied" with the Marxist theory of history, psychoanalysis, and individual psychology. He sets out to describe why his gut tells him that these are unscientific theories. He argues against theories that have explanatory power. Popper has a problem with Marxists because no matter what happens in the world, they can explain the event in light of their theory. When a person believes a theory to be true, everything that happens is a verification of the truthfulness of the theory. Popperââ¬â¢s example is how a Marxists canââ¬â¢t... ...ctly what it was besides an instinct that it was different from more traditional sciences like chemistry or physics. Why was he so determined to separate empirical science from pseudo-science? If I could talk to Popper, I would ask him, "why bother trying to draw a line at all?" It would be more fruitful to try and distinguish between what is or isnââ¬â¢t true and what is or isnââ¬â¢t significant. I have a tendency to lean towards Kuhn over Popper. It donââ¬â¢t think that Popperââ¬â¢s ideal of proper science is useful, and he seems to agree with me ("neither a problem of meaningfulness or significance, nor a problem of truth or acceptability.") Kuhn looks at how the world really works, a far more significant area of study. Popper thinks that he has all of the answers. I distrust people who think that they know everything. I agree with Socrates, who said something like, "The only true wisdom is knowing that you know nothing." Kuhn doesnââ¬â¢t make rules about how science should be done, he makes suggestions. Popper wants to draw a line down the middle between science and non-science. The more I look at the problem, the more it becomes obvious that the line is not sharp, if it can be drawn at all.

Racism in America Today Essay
Racism has been a terrible problem in American society for hundreds of years. Racism issues are not limited to one specific race, but include all races. It is the responsibility of the people of this nation to address racism and learn to accept and embrace each other for our differences, and allow this great nation to become even more united for our sake and the sake of future generations. To eliminate racism it is imperative to know first, where racism started and how it has developed, why it continues to be present in our nation today, and what we must do as a people to overcome this major problem. History The Middle Passage was the system set up as a form of triangular trade that forced millions of innocent humans from their homes in Africa, and forced them to become slaves as part of the Atlantic slave trade. These people were essentially traded as slaves for materials, food, supplies etc. Many of the enslaved Africans were shipped to the Caribbean and the Americas. The Middle Passage route began in Europe where they left with the manufactured goods and headed to Africa. The goods were then traded for the slaves, and then the ships set off for the Americas and Caribbean islands (Stoddard). After the trading was done there the ships would return back to Europe. According to Elizabeth Mancke, and Carole Shammas authors of, ââ¬Å"The Creation of the British Atlantic World,â⬠they write, ââ¬Å"An estimated 15% of the Africans died at sea, with mortality rates considerably higher in Africa itself in the process of capturing and transporting indigenous peoples to the ships. The total number of African deaths directly attributable to the Middle Passage voyage is estimated at up to two million; a broader look at African deaths directly attributable to the institution of slavery from 1500 to 1900 suggests up to four million African deaths. â⬠Historian Lisa Vox expounds on the origin of slavery in North America in her article ââ¬Å"The Start of Slavery in North America. â⬠Vox states that, ââ¬Å"Historians normally date the start of slavery in the North American colonies to 1619. That year, a Dutch ship carrying African slaves docked at Point Comfort, which served as Jamestownââ¬â¢s checkpoint for ships wanting to trade with the colonists. The crew of the Dutch ship was starving, and as John Rolfe noted in a letter to the Virginia Companyââ¬â¢s treasurer Edwin Sandys, the Dutch traded 20 African slaves for food and supplies. â⬠It was not until the early nineteenth century that this practice was banned with a hefty penalty for those individuals that were found participating in it. Other groups of people were affected by racism as well. When Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas in 1492, he discovered the Native American Indians which he referred to as ââ¬Å"savages. â⬠The Europeans deemed the Native Americans as uneducated, uncivilized creatures, and treated them as such. Native Americans were manipulated and taken advantage of by the European people, and treated more like animals than human beings. This was another historical beginning of racism in America. As America began to flourish in the mid nineteenth century, many immigrants (Irish, Chinese, Norwegians, and the Italians to name a few) flocked to the New World to seek fortune and freedom. The accumulation of many different cultures, beliefs, and ethnicities resulted in nicknaming the United States as the ââ¬Å"melting pot. â⬠While they were all united in their resolve to be free and determined to live the ââ¬Å"American dream,â⬠prejudices began to form as one race considered itself superior to the others. Americans were not happy that there were others so willing to take low pay for the jobs that they were scarcely available. There was low tolerance for different cultures and beliefs. Immigrants sought refuge and segregated themselves from one another by forming their own communities, thus resulting in ââ¬Å"Little Italyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Chinatownâ⬠etc. Prejudices dissolved somewhat with the initiation of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States, along with the Bill of Rights. The Emancipation Proclamation was released in 1863 at the conclusion of the Civil War; however, slavery was not made illegal everywhere in the U. S. until the Thirteenth Amendment took effect in December 1865. Even though slavery was outlawed, there continued to be a strong segregation between the whites and African Americans. Although the Constitution states that ââ¬Å"all men are created equal,â⬠Latinos, Native Americans, African Americans, and other ethnicities were not receiving this kind of treatment. During the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960ââ¬â¢s, many groups were formed to combat this problem of inequality. Groups such as the Black Panthers, and the Japanese American Citizens League sought to protest to gain equal rights. Such Civil Rights leaders like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. participated in nonviolent protesting to fight for these rights. In Alabama Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white person and was arrested for it, this lead to the Montgomery Bus Boycott where African Americans refused to use the buses for almost a year, and then the state ruled that it was unconstitutional to have segregated buses. It was through leaders and acts like the one just mentioned that have ended segregations and given equal rights to all Americans. Post- Racial In 2008 after Barack Obama was elected president, during the time leading up to his inauguration, it was said that many people heard for the first time, the term post-racial. The term post-racism represented a new era initiated by putting the first African-American president in office. Several people expected, believed, hoped or wanted that this new presidency would change how racism was viewed and experienced in this land of the free and home of the brave. Many individuals wanted to be able to come to this country and be a part of the great opportunity that is presented in America. They wanted to embrace a country with freedom and with a democratic government. These are a few of the things that people from other countries can only hope for and dream that someday they might make the money for the documentation and be able pay for the trip over to this land of opportunity. There are many who make the trip with expectations in their heads of how wonderful it will be upon arrival to the United States. Unfortunately not all of these individuals receive a warm welcome upon entry to this country. Racism happens to every race. Depending on what race someone might be, or what town or city that person may go it is very possible that they will feel that they are not wanted there. In the following example Kevin Merida, a writer for the Washington Post, writes about an incident in his article, ââ¬Å"Racist Incidents Give Some Obama Campaigners Pause. â⬠While campaigning for Barack Obama in Indiana, Danielle Ross and her group experienced a horrible response that none of them expected. Ross recalled on that day that, ââ¬Å"The first person I encountered was like, ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ll never vote for a black person. â⬠This does not sound like racism is out of our mists. On a National Public Radio broadcast, Rebecca Roberts interviews Ralph Eubanks author of ââ¬Å"The House at the End of the Road. â⬠Roberts asks Eubanks to define post-racial and his response is as follows, ââ¬Å"I think there are two popular definitions of post-racial. I think the first definition is that we are ââ¬â itââ¬â¢s where race is no longer an issue or an impediment to progress in American society. I think thatââ¬â¢s one way that it is often defined. Another way that it is defined is that moving ââ¬â that post-racial means a color-blind society where race is not an issue. We are all Americans, and weââ¬â¢re just completely color blind. So, there are issues with both of those definitions, and where weââ¬â¢re actually moving is somewhere in between those. â⬠For a majority of Americans, this is the goal that is in the back of their minds. Every man is created equal; everyone has the same rights, and is not judged by the color of skin they were born with. This great nation has taken steps in that direction. America is not the same place as it was in the 1950ââ¬â¢s. Members of minority groups are not invisible like they were back then. Eubanks talks more about how he does not think that there will ever be a post-racial society because of our demographics. He believes that a post-racial society is something to always hope for, and strive towards, but pictures a multi-racial society with many different components to it. And a lot of that depends on, over the next 20 years, where our demographics take us (Roberts). Striving towards the ideal of having a color blind society will not come to past by evading the issue. Stopping racism When the topic of racism comes up many may think, ââ¬Å"Oh no, here we go again, someone else complaining about racism. Or, why do we have to talk about this? Isnââ¬â¢t it time we moved on? â⬠This may be a very uncomfortable the topic for countless American, but this is a conversation that needs to happen and continue to happen until this problem ceases to exists. It wonââ¬â¢t disappear just because we choose not to mention it. Tim Wise, writer for timwise.org, talks about the problem of racism here in America in his article ââ¬Å"Denial, Evasion Wonââ¬â¢t Solve Racism. â⬠Wise says that, ââ¬Å"Indeed, the problem is not talking about racism but racism itself: Contrary to popular belief, race is not merely a card played by those who wish to stir up resentment. Instead it is a real and persistent determiner of who has what and why in this country. â⬠Nobody can help what family they are born into, or what color their skin might be. Looking at the issue of race from a spiritual stand point, we are all sons and daughters of a loving Heavenly Father. Why would one human being think less of the other? The golden rule says that we do unto others like you would want them to do unto you. These are simple solutions to a giant problem. Like mentioned earlier, many are tired of hearing about these things, but however tired many are of hearing about this, people of color are more sick and tired of living it. Conclusion To eliminate racism it is imperative to know first, where racism started and how it has progressed so that mistakes from the past can be avoided. By understanding why it continues to be present in our nation today, one can understand that there are significant changes that need to take place in order for this problem to be overcome. In concurrence with Wise, ââ¬Å"until whites join with our black and brown brothers and sisters to put an end to the kind of racial inequity described above, weââ¬â¢ll continue to be confronted with the uneasy conversations, as well we should be. â⬠It will take courage, consistency, and time just as it has already, but we are making progress and in due time this nation will become all that our founding fathers dreamed it would be.
